Value Proposition and Call to Action

January 30th, 2009 Posted in Web Design

Getting visitors to your website is only half of the battle (that’s for another blog post). Once they are there, you literally have seconds to grab their attention and keep them on your website. There are many ways to do this, but at the root are two simple, and in our opinion the most important, ways: value proposition and call to action.

Value Proposition
The idea of a value proposition isn’t a new one, the term has been around for decades. Value proposition is defined in many ways, but ultimately it can be described as what your customers get from you when they engage with you. Your “unique” value proposition in what differentiates your products and services from those of companies who offer the same or similar things, or the unique benefits of your offerings.

When a visitor comes to your website, it’s imperative that you present your value proposition prominently in a clear, relevant, and easy to understand manner. You need to grab their attention and separate your business from the crowd.

Call to Action
After you have their attention, you obviously want a visitor to your website to do something. Maybe you want them to buy something, or request a quote for you services, or become a member. Whatever it is, with the value proposition, you’ve told them “why”, now you need to tell them what you want them to do. Make sure you do it and be loud and clear.
