Microsoft Gunning for Google with Bing

June 3rd, 2009 Posted in News

BingMicrosoft has publicly unveiled its new, improved search engine Bing. While it remains to be seen if Bing’s arrival is that of the much awaited “Google killer”, what seems clear is that the new search engine is at the very least a far more competitive product than Live Search.

On the surface, Bing looks great. The homepage features striking images and photography, and the new brower toolbar looks sharp. But the most significant changes are under the hood. Bing is designed to be a “decision engine” in addition to a search engine. Microsoft promotes the goal of Bing as being to help people make decisions through guided search and a focus on task completion (and reduce information overload).

Micorsoft is backing Bing with a huge marketing campaign, so it will be interesting to see how things progress over the coming months. We believe competition generates the best results for consumers, so we are (dare we say it) rooting for Microsoft to at least make a small splash on this one.
